July - Sardine Fever on the Hibiscus Coast

When the sardines run gets going in June and July, the Hibiscus Coast is the place to be. These tiny little fish attract a delightful symphony of sea life. From the ostentatious dolphin frolicking in the waves and the ensemble of swooping seagulls to the ever favourite, gigantic whales, this spectacle is a fascinating and unforgettable experience.

Watching millions upon millions of silver fish ribbon their way up the coast. A chance to see hundreds of dolphins surfing past while sea birds dive bomb the sardines and occasional whale breaches the surface. People of all shapes and sizes flock to the beaches when the word gets around that the sardines have come ashore, or have been netted by the local seine net fishermen. The sardine is often called the 'fever' fish because people literally go crazy when the fish appear close inshore. It is not uncommon to see fully clothed adults diving into the sea to capture a few fish. This natural phenomenon occurs only once a year.

To learn more about this phenomenon phone the Hibiscus Coast Margate Tourism Office (039)212 2322/3/4 or visit their website www.sunnymargate.com.
